Choosing the correct technology depends heavily on the lifecycle of the shipment. For express shipping where labels are short-lived, Direct Thermal (DT) printing is dominant. Because DT uses chemically treated heat-sensitive media that turns black upon contact with the printhead, it requires no ribbon, lowering operational overhead. However, DT labels remain sensitive to excessive heat and UV exposure.
Conversely, for inventory warehousing and tracking where labels must withstand extreme cold, friction, and chemical exposures, Thermal Transfer (TT) technology is preferred. In TT printing, the printhead melts a wax or resin ribbon onto the label stock.
